Surfs Up…Not!

This past Saturday was the first day it really felt like summer on Nantucket.  After work, Steve loaded up the boards and off we went to Fisherman’s beach so that I could tackle #28 on my list of 30 things to do before I’m 30 : really learn to surf on my own.

Off I go!

Getting in the water

Unfortunately, the waves weren’t really that great and so I only practiced wiping out.  I should probably read Neil’s surf report on the Nantucket blACKbook before I go next!  On the plus side, it felt so refreshing to be in the water again. (Note: you definitely still need to wear a wetsuit.)

No Waves

I’ll try again next time… I welcome any and all tips from the experts out there.

Right at the top of the stairs to the beach there is a little box called, “The Little Free Library” where beach goers can “take a book and return a book”.   Even though I’ve lived on Nantucket for 7 years, the charm of this island can still catch me by surprise.

Tim & Santi’s Welcome to Nantucket Party!

A couple of months ago, I picked up the phone and made a call to a guy in Virginia who I’d never met.  I asked him if he would be interested in moving to Nantucket to be Milly & Grace’s Director of E-Commerce & Brand Development.  It only took 2 weeks to seal the deal and then 2 weeks after that Tim and his husband Santi packed up and moved up to Nantucket.  Moving to a little island 30 miles out to sea is no easy transition and I was so touched by Tim’s willingness to take a chance on me & the store, that I wanted to throw them a little party to welcome them!

The dessert table!  Our mom Patty is known for her immaculate party planning skills (She is also sometimes known as “crazy crazy matchy matchy party lady”) and she helped with the design. And Caroline did too!   Allison, Caroline & I just try to keep up and hope that she rubs off on us!!

Tim is known for always sporting a bow tie with his perfectly coordinated outfits.  (We think he might have been an Ott in a past life).  So that became our party inspiration and we even had bow tie cupcake toppers made!

The Party details!!  Of course I had to get the 100th Anniversary Blue Ball Heritage Jars to match our color theme! You can find them here!

Tim & Santi have only been on Nantucket for a couple of months but they are settling in quite nicely!  I think they may know more people than I do!  This is mostly attributed to the fact that they both have the biggest hearts and the most infectious dispositions.  When you meet these guys you can’t help but want to get to know them! Welcome Tim & Santi!  We are so happy you are here!

Road Trip

Every year, twice a year, we make the 24-hour drive up to Nantucket from Georgia in two days. And out of the thousands of times we have made this trip, this time was the first time just my mom and I made the trip together! We were pretty excited about it!

My dad helped us pack the car up…and he has become a professional at figuring out how to puzzle everything into the car. This time, I don’t even think there was anymore room for a deck of cards!

Then, we were on our way!

Road Trip 6

We made a stop a couple hours in at a Starbucks near our family friends. Because a road trip would not be complete without Starbucks! And we decided to make a visit out of it and our friends came to meet us! It was so much fun catching up with them and it helped spice up the long drive!

There was also a Chickfila right across the street from the Starbucks, so I picked up my last chicken biscuit that I’ll eat for probably about a year! I’ll miss those lots.

Then, we stopped at a mall for lunch…and since my dad wasn’t tagging along in the car, we got to fit in a little bit of shopping!

But, then we had to get down to business and finish day one of the drive.

We stopped in Maryland. And the next morning we jumped back in the car and made a straight shot for our ferry! The second day is always more exciting because we know that by the end of the day we will be on Nantucket.

On the second day, we saw a bunch of old-fashioned cars!

And after many hours, we finally made it to Nantucket!

Our first stop…before even going home…was Lola Burger! It serves the best burgers I have ever had. And last year, they closed for the season. But, they are back in action and I couldn’t be more excited!

We are so happy to finally be on Nantucket. My favorite place in the world.
