#OttEuropeanInvasion Food Inspiration – Bircher Muesli

BircherMuesliRecipeBircher Muesli is one of my all time favorite breakfasts… even though it doesn’t include bacon or hollandaise sauce or pancakes or maple syrup.  Bircher Muesli is such a refreshing and lovely way to start your day!  I first fell in love with this dish while we were living in Australia.  The Ott Girls love whipping up a batch of this yummy goodness.  Caroline posted a recipe for this last summer but this time I tweaked the recipe a bit… with inspiration from the cutest little bakery in Lausanne, Switzerland.  This bakery was right by our hotel.  We went in there every morning for bircher muesli and croissants.  The cute lady who ran the bakery was always so shocked when we ordered 6 bircher mueslis… we would almost wipe her out for the day!  Aww, memories.

Anyways, here’s how you make this classic Swiss Dish!

First, you start off by soaking your oats in apple juice overnight.  I did 1 cup of Oats (I used Gluten Free Oatmeal) and a 1/2 cup of Martinelli’s Apple Juice.

Stir the mixture so that the oats are coated in the juice.  Pop on the lid, put it in the fridge, and then forget about it until the morning.

Then in the morning, stir the oat and apple juice mixture and then transfer it into a bigger mixing bowl.  It will be soft and gooey… yum!

Next, cut the skin off one apple and grate it… you will then need to squeeze the pile of grated apple with paper towel to soak up the extra juices.  You don’t want the muesli to be too watery or soggy.  Then put the grated apple into the mixing bowl.  Next, add a cup of dry muesli.  I would only suggest using Trader Joe’s Blueberry Muesli.  It has dried blueberries, apples, raisins, currents, corn flakes, rices puffs and oats. (It’s the best one I have found so far.)  Adding the dry muesli gives the bircher muesli different textures.  (Note: Adding the dry muesli is optional! We would make it without this step.. if you want to keep it Gluten Free just use the Gluten Free Oats.)

Next, add yogurt!  Any flavor.  I chose vanilla bean.  Then add fresh berries!  You can add raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and/or pomegranate seeds!  Mix it all up and then put back into the fridge to chill.  Then when you are ready to eat, scoop the bircher muesli into your bowls, top with more berries and nuts…. and ENJOY!!

Breakfast is served!  And this is a perfect summertime alternative to oatmeal… No one wants to eat hot oatmeal in the summer.

If you want to be really European, you must serve with a cappuccino!  (I’m having fun with my new Nespresso Machine and frother!)

Same Page Monday

1. Caroline is done with school in Switzerland.  Crazy to believe!! She is all packed up and can’t wait to get her butt to Nantucket for the summer!

CarolineComingHome

She is also excited about DAFFODIL Weekend…  WHICH MEANS MILLY & GRACE IS OPENING (not this weekend but) NEXT WEEKEND!!!!

2.  WHICH MEANS….. EMILY IS AT THE STORE WORKING HARD TO GET READY TO OPEN….. WHICH MEANS SHE IS NOT ANSWERING MY CALLS OR TEXTS….. WHICH MEANS NO PICTURE OF HER.  (But she did send a picture of Ivy when I asked her to send a picture of herself earlier… obsessed mom? Just sayin.)

3.  Ivy still has to wear her stupid cozy cone.  Boo.  We can’t wait for her to get back to her Ivy Adventures sans cone.

4.  I have been busy getting back into the craziness that is LA and the pursuit of my dreams.  I have really been kicking up the working out (because that is part of an actor’s job)… Luckily, Tracy is in town and is teaching a master class to her clients. She really is an inspiration.  The energy when she teaches is magnetic. I love her!  3 days down and 2 more to go…  This is the calm before the sweatiness…

5.  I used to go to Starbucks everyday but now I am obsessed with something else… MATCHA GREEN TEA!!  I really have noticed a difference since I started drinking it this past week.  I think it has even helped with my energy during my workouts!  I mean either all of a sudden I am becoming a badass worker outer or it’s the Matcha Green Tea… I would put my money on the power of Matcha.  I might have to try a few days without to see if I do notice a difference. I will get back to you on the results.

6.  The only thing people in LA have been talking about for the past couple weeks has been Coachella.  Does the rest of the world know what this is or that it is happening this weekend??  This town is obsessed.  Coachella this.. Coachella that.. Coachella is a music festival out in the desert in Palm Springs/Indio.  People dress like bohemians and camp out and party.  Young Hollywood takes over… even Leonardo Dicaprio.  Check out his amazing dance moves.  It cracks me up.

7. And finally, this little clip of Pharrell on Oprah. It made me happy and made me tear up.

True testament to loving what you do, believing in yourself and coming from a truly authentic and loving place…do all that and you will achieve amazing things!

And that’s it for this Monday!!

Movie Review – The Grand Budapest Hotel

There are two types of people.

People who like Wes Anderson movies and People who DON’T like Wes Anderson movies.

WesAndersonMovies

When I told a couple people that I was going to go see The Grand Budapest Hotel, the responses I got were either… I heard it wasn’t good or so and so saw it and they didn’t like it.  I was a little discouraged but then remembered…

When you watch one of Wes Anderson’s movies you should know that you are in for a quirky, absurd, imaginative and aesthetically beautiful wild ride…. so I say to you (and myself) let yourself go on that wild ride.  Throw logic out the window, be in the moment and laugh!  His movies are funny!  And I was the only one in the theater laughing out loud!  I couldn’t believe it.

So what was this movie about?  Well, I guess I will let the actors tell you themselves…

Critics are saying this is Wes Anderson’s best movie yet!  Before I agree with them, I think I need to go back and re watch all of them.  But I would definitely say it is worth seeing… if you are open to it.

The sets, the costumes, the props and the locations were all gorgeous.  You could tell that every little detail was thought of… I think Wes might be a little bit of a perfectionist.

And the actors were all bringing their A game.  To recruit a cast that included Ralph Fiennes, Jude Law, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray,  Tilda Swinton, Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody, Ed Norton, Jason Schwartzman (and the list goes on)… is awe inspiring… especially when most of them only had small parts in the movie.  It has to be a true testament to Wes Anderson.

One of the reasons why I think I loved watching this movie so much was because I truly believed that every member of the cast, including Wes Anderson and his crew, had so much fun while shooting.  The reason why I laughed out loud some of the time was because I would just imagine them being on set and playing out some of the crazy scenes.   There seemed to be a genuine bond, respect and comradery with the whole cast that is not always seen in films.  I am sure this is why the same amazingly talented actors come back to work with Anderson film after film.

My Take Aways from This Movie:

1.  I know we get set in our ways and what we like and have a need to be in control… but sometimes we just need to sit back and relax and enjoy the show… in life (and in the movie theaters)!  Be open to new adventures, experiences, people and opportunities.

2.  Do what you love and love what you do… and then it won’t feel like work.

3.  Laugh out loud.  It’s good for you.
