How-To: Party Banner

banner

A couple people during the party asked me how I made the “Happy Birthday Emily” banner. My mom taught me how to make this several years ago and we usually make one for every party we have! It’s pretty easy, but it does take a little while. And for this particular banner…my mom made it all by herself because her helpful hand (me) accidentally passed out around 7pm because of that darn jet lag. (Sorry, Mom!) Anyway, we put together a how-to so you can make one of these banners too!

Here are the supplies you need:

banner1

STEP 1 is to go shopping! The circle cutterthe mat, the ribbon, construction paper and the letters can all be found at Michaels. And the scalloped-edge circles can be found on Etsy.

banner2

Cut out one 7-inch circle per letter. Push down hard on the center of the circle cutter to hold the paper in place and the push down on the blade and hold it down while swinging the blade around to make a full circle.

banner3

Use double-sided tape to stick the scalloped edge circle in the center of the circles you just cut out of the construction paper.

banner4

Glue the back of the letters and paste them onto the center of the scalloped-edge circle.

banner5

Using the X Acto Knife slice a straight line just wide enough to fit the ribbon through on both edges of the circle. Then, thread the ribbon down through the slice on the left and up through the slice on the right so that the ribbon goes behind the circle and not across the front of it.

banner6

Then, repeat for each letter, stringing them on in order to make your word. Use a new piece of ribbon for each word. Then, place one word on the wall at a time so that you can accurately space and center the words. We used packing tape to stick it to the wall. And voila…you’re all done and ready to party!

You can have the banner say anything you want. It doesn’t just have to be for birthdays. I made a “Happy Mothers Day” banner a couple years ago, you could make one with your baby’s name on it to hang in his or her nursery, at my graduation party it said “Pepperdine Bound”! Get creative with it and have fun!

I’m 30!

I had a very happy birthday.  I was surrounded by my family and friends – THE  most thoughtful, sweet and generous people around.  It was a night full of love, laughs, delicious bites, Pink & Grays and photo booth fun.  Thank you everyone for coming out in the snow storm to celebrate with me!  My heart is full.
A special thank you to my Mom for always throwing us the best birthday parties and for coming up with the cutest party decor!  To her partner in crime, Caroline, who helped with the vision.  Your attention to details and execution is going to serve you well ;) Dad, thank you for putting up with our love for entertaining!  To my Allie, you were there in spirit!
Miss Annie, you came all the way from Boston to whip up the most scrumptious bites for all of us to enjoy – all that for me?!  To Steve, who built that photo booth and squeezed all the grapefruits (37) for the Pink & Grays.  To Diane, it was so sweet of you to bring the cheese and veggie platters – no party is complete without them!  To Jen, for bringing your fab shrimp app! To Tim, you officially make the best party playlists ever!  To Tom, who stepped off the ferry and jumped right in to helped with the last dash preparations!  And to Miss Julia, thank you for suppling the best photo booth props!
30.  I think that means that I am officially a grown up?  Everyone keeps saying that 30 is the best decade – My 20’s were pretty wonderful so I am excited to see what my 30s have in store for me!

Now it’s time for the moment of truth – the final review of the 30 things to do before I’m 30.
Well friends, I wish I could say to you today that I checked everything off.  But alas, there are still a few things left to do.    The last month of my 20s was super hectic.  Thanksgiving, Stroll, holiday parties, Christmas preparations etc etc and I just couldn’t get it all done.  One thing my 20s did teach me was that life happens – you have to welcome it and be ok with it.  No matter how long your To Do list is, your day can’t only be about checking everything off.  While my personality is constantly fighting this, I work everyday to be better about accepting it.  So if I want to sit on the floor and cuddle my cute puppy for an hour, for goodness sake I am going to do it!  BUT I will say, that by making this list, I accomplished many more of the things that I’ve been wanting to do than I would have had I not written a list.  So I would encourage all of you to make one of your own!! And please share it with me!!  I plan to finish my list so I will keep you all informed :)
Note: A few of  my things, like #28 – really learn to surf and #19 – be better about saving money, won’t ever get checked off because they are ongoing goals of mine.

Same Page Monday

I have been sitting here with my lime La Croix staring at a blank blog post screen for the last hour.

It is almost the end of the year, and this is always the time when I reflect back on the last year and become a little more serious (well only a little more serious). I don’t have anything funny for you guys!! I feel like everything I could update you on is so trivial… Like, I got a haircut last week or post this really funny interview of Paul Rudd and Jason Segal (which they were high the whole time). I mean, you guys don’t care about that right now! It’s almost the holidays and time for being with our loved ones! Anyways, here are a few things I have been thinking about…

1.  I keep coming across this “gif” image of Jennifer Lawrence – before and after photoshopping for a magazine cover.  It is just so silly.  Do we all agree?  There was absolutely nothing wrong with the  original/natural image of JLaw.  Why does this industry feel the need to make these people look unrelateable!?!  People like to be able to relate to others.  That is actually a better marketing tool than alienating people.  Real women want to know that these stars are just like them.  Magazines would probably sell more magazines if they kept the authenticity of these amazing women.  When will this ever change?

2. Gwyneth Paltrow and Tracy Anderson just released a new webseries called The Restart Project!  It is going to be an amazing series where these two powerhouses go and meet with women who have been through the unimaginable, and talk about what they have done to overcome tragedy.  All of these women turned their focus to health and fitness to get them through.  Tracy mentioned in an interview, ” They all chose to connect with themselves more physically or invest in their health to help them heal.  None of their motivation came from vanity.”  I love that Gwyneth and Tracy are putting the spotlight on these women!  Here is one of their episodes…

We can all relate to these women in one way or another! I have spent many a day in Tracy Anderson’s studio, where all I wanted to do was cry. It was just couple weeks ago where I walked into cardio class fighting back tears the whole time. I was having one of those days where I was thinking…. “What the heck am I doing out here? Why am I trying to break into this crazy acting industry??? I am seriously being so stupid. The odds are so against me.” After an hour of dancing my heart out, I felt so much better! For me, Tracy’s method is my therapy, and for that I am so grateful for her. Thank you, Tracy!

3.That’s it for today. I will definitely have more for you next Monday. I leave for Nantucket this Thursday! The girls will be reunited, and I know we will have some stories to share. I can’t wait to land on that island and see my family!!! I miss you all. It looked like you were having too much fun without me at Emily’s party! Amazing job, Matchy Matchy Party Lady (Patty) and Caroline! XO
