Surfs Up…Not!

This past Saturday was the first day it really felt like summer on Nantucket.  After work, Steve loaded up the boards and off we went to Fisherman’s beach so that I could tackle #28 on my list of 30 things to do before I’m 30 : really learn to surf on my own.

Off I go!

Getting in the water

Unfortunately, the waves weren’t really that great and so I only practiced wiping out.  I should probably read Neil’s surf report on the Nantucket blACKbook before I go next!  On the plus side, it felt so refreshing to be in the water again. (Note: you definitely still need to wear a wetsuit.)

No Waves

I’ll try again next time… I welcome any and all tips from the experts out there.

Right at the top of the stairs to the beach there is a little box called, “The Little Free Library” where beach goers can “take a book and return a book”.   Even though I’ve lived on Nantucket for 7 years, the charm of this island can still catch me by surprise.

Almond, Coconut, Cherry Granola

Granola has always been a favorite in our family. Either with milk or yogurt, it is always a delicious breakfast…or lunch…or (if you’re like my mom) dinner!

There are many different kinds of recipes out there, and even already-made packages of granola at the grocery store…but there is just something about homemade granola that makes it just a bit more special! Our favorite recipe is our modified version of Ina Garden’s recipe. It’s quick and easy and tasty!

Almond, Coconut, Cherry Granola

Ingredients

4 cups old fashioned rolled oats

2 cups sweetened, shredded coconut

2 cups sliced almonds

1 ½ cups dried cherries, chopped (I used about ¾ cup because I don’t really like too many. Okay, okay…I forgot to check the amount needed for the recipe before going to the grocery store. Oops!)

½ cup vegetable oil

1/3 cup honey

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350°F

Toss the oats, almonds, and cinnamon together in a large bowl. Toss the coconut and cherries together in a medium bowl. Mix together the vegetable oil and honey. Pour about ¾ of the oil and honey mixture on the oat mixture and the remaining oil and honey on the cherries and coconut mixture. Stir until both mixtures are coated with the liquids. Spread oat mixture onto a baking sheet pan. Bake for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the coconut and cherries. Continue to bake for another 10 minutes. Again, stirring occasionally.

Enjoy! xoxo

Day at the Beach – Malibu

This weekend, I ventured from BH to Malibu to spend a day at the beach with my close friend Jasmine and her family. Her family has a house right on the beach during the summers… you literally walk right off your back porch onto the beach.  It doesn’t get much better than that!  We all had a lovely day soaking in the sun, watching the boys boogie board, taking walks on the beach and chatting about life.   Just what the doctor ordered!  Came back refreshed and relaxed!

Here are some shots from my day at the beach!

Little Mila (pictured below) had a fun day at the beach too!  She sat there looking at the water, got a little scared by a wave, barked at it and then slid her way down closer to the water inch by inch…
